Since 2007, Jody Bryson has led the remarkable transformation of SCTAC into one of the Southeast’s largest and most dynamic business and technology parks. Recognizing the tremendous asset of an onsite airport, he immediately shifted the park’s focus from serving only the needs of local business to one that could serve companies with global operations.

Several years later, while discussing the needs of Upstate South Carolina’s burgeoning automotive industry, he identified a long-dormant runway at SCTAC as the site of an automotive test track. Thus, the International Transportation Innovation Center (ITIC) was established, an independent, non-profit proving ground for automotive OEMs, suppliers, technology providers and research universities to test and validate mobility innovations.

Prior to joining SCTAC, Jody served as vice president of the Upstate South Carolina Alliance, an economic development organization responsible for attracting business investment to the 10-county region in the upper west corner of the state. He began his career as an executive advisor to SC Governor Carroll A. Campbell.

Jody serves on the Board of Advisors of the Greater Greenville Chamber of Commerce and is actively involved with numerous economic development organizations including the SC Department of Commerce, the Greenville Area Development Corporation, Upstate SC Alliance, as well as CU-ICAR.

Jody earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Clemson University in 1987 and a Master of Public Administration from the University of South Carolina in 1992. He is a graduate of Leadership South Carolina and Leadership Greenville and was named one of Greenville’s “50 Most Influential People” by Greenville Magazine in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2019.

As Chief Operations Officer of ITIC, Liz oversees all operations and its physical assets. This includes track management, asset development and build out, business development and communications.

Since joining the organization in 2015, she has played a crucial role in its growth and development as a leading automotive test bed in the U.S. Her customer-centric approach to business has helped transform a single, mile-long straightaway test track into a multi-configuration test bed capable of serving many customers at once.

Thanks to her vision ITIC is quickly gaining a reputation as one of the most popular and reliable test beds for commercial vehicles in the U.S.

Prior to joining ITIC, Liz worked in the development office for ALM, an international medical non-profit organization. There she was responsible for raising funds in the United States to support important medical projects around the world. She began her career in Washington, DC with the global public relations firm Burson-Marsteller where she specialized in public affairs and crisis management.

Liz is a graduate of the University of Georgia with a degree in Journalism and an emphasis in public relations.

Harry M. Lightsey III was appointed by Governor Henry McMaster to serve as Secretary of Commerce in June 2021. Since his confirmation, Lightsey has led the agency’s globally competitive recruitment strategy for South Carolina’s evolving target industries. Notably, through partnerships with state and allied economic development leaders, South Carolina achieved historic recruitment in 2022, announcing $10.27 billion in capital investment.

During Lightsey’s tenure to-date, Commerce has secured some of the largest, most pivotal economic development deals on record. Key announcements include emerging battery materials closed-loop supply chain developer Redwood Materials’ $3.5 billion investment in Berkeley County; Scout Motors’ $2 billion investment in Richland County, reviving a classic American automotive brand as an electric vehicle; Albemarle Corporation’s $1.3 billion investment to create a lithium hydroxide processing facility in Chester County; and BMW Manufacturing’s $1.7 billion investment, expanding Plant Spartanburg production capabilities to accommodate electric vehicle production.

Lightsey leads the agency with an open and collaborative approach, working alongside the state’s executive and legislative leaders to align South Carolina’s economy for sustained, long-term growth. As part of this approach, the agency offers a breadth of complimentary services to enable all South Carolina businesses to remain nimble, innovative and successful. The agency also retooled its site selection program, LocateSC, to ensure economic development stakeholders can easily navigate the state’s available inventory and demographic data.

A fixture in South Carolina’s business community for decades, Lightsey served in top executive leadership roles for major corporations in South Carolina and across the nation. Notably, he served as the president of BellSouth Telecommunications for South Carolina prior to the company’s merger with AT&T, afterward becoming president for AT&T’s Southeast region.

Following his 26 years in the telecommunications industry, Lightsey joined the General Motors Corporation where he directed the legacy automaker’s federal government affairs operation, as well as the emerging technologies, OnStar and infotainment divisions. He has also served as a member of the board of directors of the Federal Reserve Bank in Richmond, Virginia.

Lightsey is a 1978 graduate of Princeton University and a 1981 graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Law.

Lightsey, a native of Columbia, S.C., is married with two adult children.

Governor Henry Dargan McMaster, a longtime public servant of South Carolina, was born May 27, 1947, in Columbia, South Carolina. He received a bachelor's degree in history from the University of South Carolina in 1969.

In 1973, he graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Law, where he was on the editorial board of the South Carolina Law Review. Later that year, he was admitted to the Richland County Bar Association. He also served in the U.S. Army Reserves, receiving an honorable discharge in 1975.

Upon graduation from law school, he was a legislative assistant to U.S. Senator Strom Thurmond in Washington, D.C., and joined the law firm of Tompkins and McMaster in 1974. He was later admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court, U.S. Court of Claims, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, and the Supreme Court of the United States. Governor McMaster practiced law for over 40 years, as a federal and state prosecutor and in private practice in both state and federal courts.

Governor McMaster was the first U.S. attorney appointed by President Ronald Reagan in 1981, and his "Operation Jackpot" investigation into international drug smuggling resulted in more than 100 convictions.

He was elected attorney general of South Carolina in 2002 and reelected in 2006.

As attorney general, Governor McMaster made prosecution of criminal domestic violence a priority and led a crackdown on child internet predators. He extended the South Carolina grand jury's jurisdiction to environmental and gang crimes and broadened its authority to include securities crimes.

Following service on the South Carolina Ports Authority Board of Directors, he was elected lieutenant governor in 2014. As lieutenant governor, he led efforts to protect our state’s growing senior citizen population with social, economic, and health support services, which earned national recognition from AARP.

McMaster was sworn in as governor in January 2017 following then - Governor Nikki Haley’s appointment as United States Ambassador to the United Nations. He was elected to a full term as governor in November 2018 and re-elected in November 2022.

Governor McMaster has led a strong and vibrant South Carolina economy, announcing more than 83,000 new jobs and over $34 billion in new capital investment in the state. Under his leadership, the state has made transformative investments in the classroom by expanding full day four-year-old kindergarten, raising K-12 teacher pay, and placing a school resource officer in every school. Colleges and universities are becoming more accessible and affordable due to the governor’s tuition freeze and by his doubling of funding for needs-based financial aid for in-state students. He has cut taxes on our state’s small businesses by $317 million and has returned over $1 billion dollars to the taxpayers. The governor has kept the commitment to our state’s military veterans, first responders, law enforcement, firefighters, and peace officers – through pay increases, retention bonuses, and exemptions on retirement income exemption. The governor’s limited, measured, and temporary COVID-19 actions – coupled with freezing all new state government spending during the pandemic – allowed South Carolina’s economy not only to survive but to actually thrive and generate record surpluses.

She is an accomplished government relations professional with two decades of policy experience both in government and the private sector.

Before joining Autos Drive America, Safavian was Executive Vice President for Government Affairs at the Retail Industry Leaders Association. Prior to holding that position, she spent the majority of her career on Capitol Hill, serving as Staff Director and General Counsel on the House Ways & Means Committee, and holding senior positions on other key House Committees, including Energy & Commerce and Oversight & Government Reform.

Among her various accolades, Safavian was named one of the “Top Trade Association Lobbyists” by The Hill six times since 2017. She has been named by the National Law Journal as one of the “Top 10 Lawyers on Capitol Hill” and one of the “Fabulous 50” top congressional staff members by Roll Call. Safavian has a J.D. from Michigan State University College of Law and holds a B.A. from Saint Louis University.

Joseph C. Von Nessen is a research economist in the Division of Research at the Darla Moore School of Business where he specializes in regional economics, regional economic forecasting and housing economics. He regularly conducts a wide variety of economic impact analyses, feasibility studies and independent market research projects for clients in both the private and public sector.

Von Nessen engages in industry-level and regional economic forecasting for organizations at the state, national and international level. He has served as lead researcher on projects with clients as diverse as Sonoco, BlueCross BlueShield, Michelin, Boeing and the Savannah River National Lab, among others. He has also been the recipient of many grants from both local and national sources, including the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Department of Defense.

Von Nessen is also responsible for the preparation and presentation of the University of South Carolina's annual statewide economic forecast. He serves on the advisory committee of the South Carolina Board of Economic Advisors and is regularly invited to brief the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond on economic conditions in South Carolina. He frequently appears on programs at national conventions, including the International Builders Show, the 21st Century Building Expo and the North American Regional Science Council and its subsidiaries.

In addition, Von Nessen specializes in housing economics and residential real estate and provides economic and marketing research and consulting services to builders, developers and other businesses in the housing industry on a regular basis. His recent academic research has focused on the application of hedonic house price modeling to the housing industry. He is a member of the National Association of Home Builders and is actively involved with the local branches of the Home Builders Association and the Association of REALTORS throughout South Carolina.

Von Nessen is a frequent speaker for business and government leaders throughout the southeast, providing information and consultation about business, housing markets, and local economies. He also makes frequent media appearances to discuss various local economic topics of interest.
